The water molecule breaks down into two ions - a positively charged hydrogen cation H + and a negatively charged hydroxyl anion OH-. The pH values describe the content of positively charged hydrogen ions.
The change in pH value with 1 (unit) corresponds to a change in concentration 10 times. At pH 6 the amount of hydrogen ions H + is ten times more, than at pH 7 and vice versa.
In neutral water the concentration of all ions in the water is the same and it has a pH = 7. Water with pH < 7 is considered acidic and at pH > 7 for alkaline.
Total mineralization is the sum of the substances dissolved in the water. This indicator is also known as "solute content" or "total salt content"., since the substances dissolved in water are, as a rule, different salts. Most often these are inorganic salts (bicarbonates, chlorides, calcium sulphates, magnesium, potassium and sodium) and insignificant amounts of organic matter, dissolved in water.
Water is also terribly sensitive to external influences. In addition to the natural factors of total mineralization, infiltrations from industrial water or wastewater into road ditches also play a role.
